This is Part 2. For Part 1 of The Good, The Bad and The Embarrassing of Social Media
as seen on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube
Buy my stuff.
We are so good.
By my stuff..
OK, I’m paraphrasing BUT it gets a bit tiring doesn’t it?
I see small business dip their toes into social media (good on you!) and have a flurry of posts about how good they are then nothing.
I noticed one business kept posting continuously to vote for them in a competition. They were pushing it hard. After the awards night, nothing. No posts, no mentions, no nothing.
Another words, while you are useful we will engage you but now that you aren’t, we can’t be bothered anymore…
The real truth is people don’t care how good you are or what you have until they know what you can do for them… It’s a bit hard to hear, isn’t it?
Look, the more I post, the better I am getting at it too. I’m still getting my social media & blogging legs on.
When posting, think of the reader, what they want and what they are looking for and write your posts for them and to them.
What is your product/service and how is it going to help your market?
Some examples may be:
Veterinary Clinic open on Sundays may post “Don’t panic trying to find the nearest emergency service on weekends. We are open every Sunday, 9am till 12pm.”
Dentist “Flossing twice a day keeps the fillings away”
Realtor “With us, you won’t waste hours looking at houses you don’t want to buy. We listen hard on your first visit.”
Remember to frame your message in the following way
WIIFM – What’s in it for me? How is this going to help me?
That is what the person who is reading your article/post/tweet will be thinking.
Start writing and frame it to how you can help your client. Put yourself in their shoes. Is it a tip, educational or training content, a short message or notification or an advertisement? Ads & promotions are ok providing they aren’t every single update or post.
Just keep writing. I’m sure I could improve on all of those above. At least I’ve started. I will get better and so will you.
Yes, it will be unfamiliar and take time. You may have to change how you think and that’s ok.
NB: keep any testimonials and ask if you can use them. Scan cards or take photos and post these to your facebook fan page and use twitter to link to it.
Definitely post them!
May will be my social media month. Stay tuned for the part 3 and the most important post: The Power of Social Media.

PS Who am I writing for? Well, I noticed when I speak to my veterinary colleagues in practice that some are very nervous about using social media. It is unfamiliar. We spent most of our days healing animals, not on the internet. So originally this was for them. Then I realised I know so many other people, professionals and business owners, who have heard that they must be on social media but aren’t really sure how to do it.
Enjoy and dip that toe in! Just do it!
